One very distinguishing feature you will notice once you see the new Tecno Spark 8 is the short box, which really looks good and premium. Screams iPhone and Samsung all the way, by the way. Its content also fuels and looks premium. Sliding the box open reveals the phone itself wrapped in an orange plastic cover. Also inside the box is a soft TPU case that has a frosted kind of texture on the sides and a glossy texture everywhere else Further inside the box is a 13 months warranty from TECNO Mobile on this device. There is a 10-watt charger down here, which is acceptable considering the price of this device. There is a Micro USB cable for charging and file transfer. Then a pair of air phones and a SIM ejector tool.
Design and build
Unwrapping it reveals its large 6.52 inches display with the center waterdrop notch. And there is already a screen protector applied here. The frame and back of Tecno Spark 8 are made of very glossy material. The phone is available in the colors Turquoise Cyan, Atlantic Blue, and Iris Purple. TECNO didn’t just make a phone, this one is a mirror. The result of which is a fingerprint magnet so be sure to get a case, just in case.
The good news is that there is one included in the box. The left edge of this phone holds the SIM card tray, while the right edge has the volume buttons and the power button. The bottom side features the microphone and a micro USB port. There’s also a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack but the speakers are missing. That gigantic square mount on the back panel is where the camera and LED flash are. This just gives this phone a fresh design.
The display of Tecno Spark 8 is a 6.5 inches 720P IPS panel which houses its 8 megapixels selfie cam. There are two flashlights flushed into the top edge of the display for charging notification and photography. The display is what we would expect from an entry-level phone. It produces okay colors but doesn’t have a sharpening effect on it. On YouTube, you can stream video at 1080P resolution for even better content consumption. The display gets bright enough for everyday use. It is a decent display for this class.
Powering this smartphone is a Mediatek MT6762 Helio P22 (12 nm) CPU along with 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. This is quite disappointing regardless of the fact that it’s meant to be a budget offering. On paper, one might be disappointed, but when it comes to real-life experience, it is just about what to expect from a device like this. But that aside, this phone has a 5,000 mAh battery that is more than enough for a long day of usage.
With an included 10 watt charger it takes about 3 hours to get to a hundred percent from zero. Battery life shouldn’t be a challenge here considering the low power consumption of this phone. The 5,000 mAh battery is one of the biggest strengths of this device.
There’s a dual camera set up on the back of the Tecno Spark 8 which includes a very large rectangular amount that consists of a main 16 MP, f/1.8, 27mm (wide), AF sensor. On the phone is an 8 MP, f/2.0, 26mm (wide) shooter in the water drop launch display. This phone can shoot video up to 1080P. There’s no 4k here, no electronic or optical image stabilization.
Tecno Spark 8 supports 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. The phone can be unlocked using a pin, pattern, fingerprint, or facial recognition. Setting up the biometrics will be a quick and easy one. The fingerprint sensor is accurate and fast enough. Face recognition is not so fast but does the job. It will suffer at night though.
